August 2018 - Mater is one of my favorite cats of all time.  He's such a sweet boy with simple needs.  He occupies himself when I'm at work but when I'm home, he wants to sit beside me anytime I'm on the sofa.  He can't jump up on his own so I lift him up to be beside me.  He can get himself down, but "up" continues to be beyond his ability.

One aspect of the damage lack of oxygen caused is his inability so far to figure out how to step into a litter box, even a low sided one.  Because of that, he has been using pee pads placed beside the litter box since the medical incident that stole his eye sight.  He uses the pee pads faithfully and NEVER has accidents.  He's actually easier to clean up after than the ones who DO use a litter box.

Mater needs a home that doesn't have hazards like sunken living rooms or young kids running and playing. He can't see them so he can't avoid them.  Mater navigates his surroundings well and when he's comfortable in knowing where things are, he will run from one room to the other just for the fun of it and to see where you've gone.

If you think you might have the type of home and lifestyle that would accommodate Mater's special needs, contact me to discuss him and arrange a visit.  bethbach2@gmail.com

10/30/17 - Mater is doing great!  Blindness isn't going to slow him down at all.  It didn't take him long to figure out where everything is in the house.  He can play with toys that jingle or have catnip in them so he can find them.  He also loves just snuggling by my side at night on the sofa.

Update 09/18/17 - Unfortunately, Mater suffered a rare reaction to anesthesia during his neuter surgery.  His heart stopped suddenly, but the vet staff was able to restart it fairly quickly.  However, it is becoming clear that Mater suffered some impairment due to lack of oxygen. Mater currently appears to be blind and he's a bit unsteady on his feet.  He is getting around very well though and is just as loving as ever.  He's going to need some time for his brain to heal and for us to see what his limitations are really going to be.

June 2017 - Mater is pure and simple a stinker!  He loves to run and play but also will sit in your lap for a good snuggle.  He gets along well with adult cats as well.
