Can you keep up with me?
Happy What? Happy New Year? Happy Hanukkah? Happy Halloween? Happy Birthday?
Just Happy. Happy ME!

My big cat name is Caruso because I sing so much, quite beautifully, I know. But even when I'm a big cat serenading the world, I'll still be a happy cat, because I just am.

I have my sisters and all the other cats in this house to play with, and people pick us up all the time to pet us. Of course, I'm really busy exploring the universe, and I don't have a lot of time for this cuddling stuff, but still, it's nice when you've been dashing all the place and want just a little rest before you dash off in the other direction. I'm the fastest kitten ever! I can get through any open door before you can close it, I betcha.

I bet I'd like your house too. Do you have any friends for me to play with? Could I bring one of my sisters? Or both? They're very little and they don't like to be alone.

Chapter 5

“You're not the only new kittens in the house,” said Split. “Let's go meet the babies.”

“Babies have to go to school?” asked Harry, nudging Pringle and Draco out of the way to be close to Split as they strolled through the hall.

“No, babies just need love and the good example of older cats and kittens. You two are old to begin training, but I have hopes for you.” Split walked up to a door. Raising himself on his hind legs, he pushed the handle down. “The humans don't know I can do that,” he said. “But it's very useful.”

“YAAAAH!” squeaked a tiny voice. “I won't let you hurt my sisters!”

A tiny tabby with white paws stood before them, all a-fluff, with his legs braced and tail like a bottle brush, straight in the air. “I won't!” he squeaked again.

“Vermin!” yelled Draco as he dashed back out the door.

Harry rather wanted to run too, but he thought maybe a lynx point wouldn't do that. So he hunkered down at a safe distance and watched as Split walked up to the baby kitten and licked his head.

“We don't want to hurt you or your sisters,” said Split. “We just want to meet you.”

It's hard to remain on the fluff when someone's licking you, but the little tabby tried. “Well, well, that's good. Because my mama said I was to defend my sisters 'cause I'm the biggest, and, and there's no telling what I'd do to you!”

“Yeah!” “Us too!” squeaked two other voices. Two pairs of eyes, one set green and the other blue, peeked out from behind a stack of towels. When Split and Harry looked at them, they ducked back down.

“Those are my sisters, Merry and Christmas. My name is Happy,” said the tabby. “Well, that's my baby name. My big cat name is Caruso. He was a very good human singer, though not as good as a cat, of course.”

“You must be a good singer then,” Split said.

“Oh, yes.” And Happy-Caruso lifted his voice in the Cat-a-log Aria, well-known to all cat music connoisseurs. His sisters crept out and burst into different songs, as cats will, Christmas, the patched calico, singing that beloved ballad, “My Food Bowl is So Empty,” and silvery Merry throwing herself into a contemporary song and athletic dance, “I Like to Meow It, Meow It.”

Split listened in rapt attention, until Happy reached the end of his catalog, Merry crept away after a last spin on her back, and only the plaintive strains of “My food bowl is so empty, And why does no one care?” hung alone on the air. He brushed his eyes with a paw. “Ah, music. A magic beyond all we do.”

The little calico approached Harry. “Are you going to be our new mother?”

Harry jumped and yowled in surprise. Like Draco, he wanted to run, but he'd moved out of the way of the singers, and now they blocked his path out the door. He raised a paw to swat, but then he thought maybe a lynx point with a big heart wouldn't do that, and he lowered his paw carefully. He scrunched down low to Christmas' face. “I can't be your mother. But I can be your friend.” Awkwardly, he licked her head, like he'd seen Split do.

She purred. “Oh, that will be nice.”

Actually, the purr sounded very deep for a tiny kitten. Harry looked up and saw that Split purred too. “Ah, you're a wizard cat for sure, Harry. You have the heart for it.”

Watch for Chapter 6 on Merry's page, coming soon.
